Diagonal

Date November 22, 2007

The past week and the days prior to that have been a rather hectic period for me, hence the lack of update in this blog. Work was like mad and even after the madness was over, I still need to run various other errands in relation to my transfer back to Kuala Lumpur.

Today is my last day in Singapore. Tomorrow, I shall be driving north to the Malaysian capital city to report for duty.

I am looking forward to settling down in my new place of living — I still have not figured out where I would rent a house — and to resume blogging, say in two weeks’ time.

In the meantime, rock on baby!

“Jetliner” Moth

Date November 16, 2007

I’ve only seen this species of moth once, and I was lucky to have my camera with me. This one does not look like your ordinary moth but I know it is a moth. Don’t ask me how did I know. I just knew this is a moth.

Anyway, this is the only picture I manage to take of the moth. If you like, you can also see interesting pictures of strange-winged moths here.

Red

Date November 12, 2007

[Updated with write-up] This is one of the pictures I took on the spur of the moment. I was jaywalking across Orchard Road in Singapore the other day when I noticed red flowers were blooming by the road side. They looked so fresh that I just felt I need to take a quick shot.

People were looking, so I didn’t really get to shoot as much as I want. That is always the problem with doing photography other than the “normal” kind of picture takings. People would look!

Macro Photography Blog Is One Month Old

Date November 11, 2007

Macro Photography Blog, which I started on October 11, is one month old today. During its formative days, I’ve filled it up with mainly close up pictures of living things. Some of the pictures are over a year old while some are quite new. I had in my safekeeping tons of macro pictures which I took over the years, but they are not always usable.

Over the past month, this blog has not seen a single day without a post, but the time has come perhaps to think about the direction of this blog.

Filling up this blog with close up pictures is not the most difficult thing to do. So long as there are pictures in my stockpile, I can go on posting more pictures day after day but that is not what I originally intended to do with this blog. Obviously there are more to macro photography than the picture — we can talk about the process of taking photos, the techniques and the technology behind it, the various camera brand and so on.

So perhaps after one month of doing just posting close up pictures, I should now take this blog to a new level, broaden its horizon a bit to not only to presenting macro photography as a results of using technology, but also to discuss about the technology itself.

It think it would be useful, to me at least because then I would have to learn more to be able to talk about the subject. But rest assured, I’d still be posting pictures although no longer on daily basis.

Coconut Crab

Date November 10, 2007

This one would not pose for you. It would just stay in this position in his aquarium until you run out of patience. So you’d be left with limited angle to explore. The good part is that you could take your time composing your shot without having to worry it might just move away.

Angry Dog

Date November 9, 2007

Hmm… does this count as a macro shot? I guess yes if you take macro photography to mean close-up photography. I was closed enough to be within the striking distance of an angry dog.

Angry Dog

This picture of a neighbour’s dog back in my hometown in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, was among the earliest pictures I took with the Canon PowerShot G6.

I guess he hated me quite a lot, for each time I ventured out of my house, it would come close and sneer at me. But we became friends later on when I throw him fried chicken leftovers or it might be because he could sense that I was not afraid of him.

Said the dog to other dogs, “No point trying to scare this one; and furthermore he has that strange weapon in his hands which emits light each time you come close. You don’t wanna mess with this one…” (In Clint Eastwood voice).

I Dream Of 787 Dreamliner

Date November 8, 2007

This is a miniature model of Boeing’s upcoming 787 Dreamliner commercial aircraft. I got this model when I attended an event organised by Boeing in Singapore about three months ago.

Dreamliner

Then one bright afternoon day, strokes of sunlight seeped through the open window of my rented apartment, creating bright spots on the floor.

I put the Dreamliner on one of the spots, positioning it so that the only the body of the aircraft is illuminated. Then I spent five minutes composing my pictures. Here’s one of the pictures.

The Dancing Jellyfish

Date November 7, 2007

Location: Underwater World, Sentosa Island, Singapore. Here’s what makes this shot difficult to take:

  • The jelly fish would not stop dancing, making it difficult to freeze their movement.
  • They were inside an aquarium so if I use flashlight to freeze their movement, the light would bounce off the aquarium glass.
  • The lights inside the aquarium was not enough to capture the subject with fast shutter speed.

So what did I do? I increase the ISO from 50 to 100, set the camera to P for programme, and set my heart also to P for prayer.

Red Hot Chilli

Date November 6, 2007

Do you like your food hot? I do. In fact, I seek out hot food. This type of chili — known in Malay language the “cili api”, literally fire chili — is the spiciest of the species, and is also among the smallest.

If anything, this is one fruit you’d better not take lightly for its size. I can tell you one thing — it’s hot!

“Sharp” Soft Focus

Date November 5, 2007

When I see flowers that look something like this, I always know I have found a good subject for macro photography — it is soft but has the potential to be sharp when photographed.

Soft

So the next time you are in the backyard or among the bushes, keep an eye on this type of flowers. They can really make macro photography a joy to indulge in.
