Olympus Imaging’s SLR planning department manager Akira Watanabe has declared that 12 megapixels will be enough to cover “most applications most customers need.”

Steve’s Digicams quoted him as saying that Olympus therefore had “no intention to compete in the megapixel wars” for its E-System — Olympus’ line of SLR cameras — and would instead focus on other characteristics such as dynamic range, color reproduction, and a better ISO range for low-light shooting.
There is an active discussion on the matter over at Digital Photography Review forum section.

Who needs 20 megapixels?
But do you think 12 megapixels is enough? Do you really need more than 12 megapixels?
I personally think 12 megapixels is enough. I’ve never actually had any use for higher megapixel and most of the time, I even had to scale down the photos I shot at 7.1 megapixels because I didn’t really need them at that resolution.
The only time when I need a high resolution is when I need to crop a photograph. Other than that, the 10 megapixels camera I have with me now is just about enough.
