Which point and shoot camera is the best for macro photography? I wish I had the luxury of testing some of the camera models in the market to make the comparison.

But based on experience, the Canon PowerShot “G” series is to me one of the best compact cameras for close-up photography.

Super macro zoom

The G series not only offers sharp and crisp image straight out of camera, it also allows zooming in super macro mode, albeit at a lower resolution. The ability to zoom in super macro mode makes a lot of difference in the way images are captured.

This series of macro shots here is taken with my old Canon PowerShot G6, which I bought in 2004.

Five years down the road and it still able to put to shame some newer cameras in terms of macro performance. Even the SX1 IS cannot match the G6’s superb macro performance despite the SX1 IS ability to shoot at zero cm distance in full resolution in super macro mode.

The thing with the SX1 IS is, you cannot zoom while shooting in super macro mode.

The G series has now reach its ninth generation with the PowerShot G10 (for some reason Canon skip the name G8), carrying with it a very high reputation in macro performance and overall image quality.
