DSLR Camera Dilemma — Pentax K-7 or Canon EOS 500D or Nikon D5000

Help this blogger decide his first DSLR camera.

[UPDATE AUG 20: I've decided to buy the K-7. Thank you for helping me decide my first ever DSLR!]

Original entry: I’m on a tight budget but an opportunity presented itself recently that allows me to afford either a Canon EOS 500D or Nikon D5000 with decent lens to boot.

This is probably the only time I can have some extra money to buy a DSLR system, so my first DSLR could very well be my only DSLR in the years to come. The 500D or 5000D seems to be a natural choice, but I may be able to spare a few more dollars more for the Pentax K-7. Reading this Pentax K-7 discussion over at DPReview forum, I can’t help but feel that the K-7 is an ideal camera to own.

What do you think? Please vote, and if you have a further note to make, please do so in the comment section.

Guys, thank your for the suggestion. I want a camera that can last me for quite sometime and one that I can rely on when I need it, and built a DSLR system around it, because later I may want to invest in several lenses in the future.

Photography is not something I do all the time. It’s just a hobby but upgrading to a DSLR system is a huge decision and undertaking for me, so I want the camera to be similarly “huge” in terms of value and performance :)

Haven’t held the K-7 yet, so like you, I’m going by what’s been written. But…what are your needs? Is weather-sealing important to you? (The K-7 is your obvious choice then.) Is photography something you do all the time, or do you pull out a camera a few times per year and want good features when you do so? (Again, the K-7′s tough body will probably hold up better if you’re banging it around a lot; the 500D felt like a toy in my hand.) Do you expect to stay mostly with the kit lens, or build up a stable of them over time? (Canon and Nikon do image-stab in the lens; Pentax can use any Pentax bayonet-mount ever made.)

K-7 is far better than the other two you mentioned in terms of features and build-quality. Perhaps K-m/K2000 suits your need?
