When Ricoh announced the GXR interchangeable unit back in November 2009, it did so on the back of a rising reputation following the release of the GRD III, touted to be among the better compact cameras out there.

But the GXR is not just any camera — it is a whole new camera system. Naturally, questions were asked if the concept would ever make it to the mainstream, especially at a time when the industry was seeing a shift following the birth of mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras.

The mirrorless interchangeable camera concept — or what is now known as EVIL or Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens — proved to be a very popular concept. Now almost everyone is looking at introducing their own EVIL.

But would there be enough interest to Ricoh’s EVIU (Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Unit) system? Only time will tell.

In the meantime, if you are curious about the GXR, check out DPReview’s comprehensive 33-page review of the GXR, with the A12 50mm unit, which, as usual comes with a generous amount of sample images.
