If I hadn’t bought the K-7, and still in the process of looking for a camera to upgrade into, I might consider the new Canon EOS 550D or the Panasonic Lumix G2.
These two cameras — one a DSLR, the other an EVIL — seem to be kind of cameras one could play for sometime until a new one worth upgrading to comes along.
I might still want to consider the K-7 but I might not be as determined as I was in August last year when I decided to buy the camera. Hence, I can understand the dilemma faced by others who are so very sure about upgrading from their point and shoot cameras but undecided when comes to the issue of choosing the new camera.
During a recent visit to the Pentax DSLR forum over at DPReview, I came across a thread started by a person who wanted opinions about which camera he should choose: Pentax K-7 or Canon EOS 550D.
I guess many others are in similar dilemma and who can blame them? Nowadays, consumers are spoilt for choice unlike during the time I bought the K-7 when the choice seems to be just between the 500D and D5000… and the K-7 slightly above the rank.
Here are the some guide in facing the dilemma between Canon EOS 550D and Pentax K-7.
First things first, if high ISO performance — something in the region of ISO 3200, 6400 or higher — is what you have been looking for, then go for the EOS 550D. If all you need is shooting within the range of ISO 100 and 1600, then go for the K-7 because it provides value not offered by the 550D, namely rugged and weather sealed body and kit lenses, faster continuous shooting, backward compatibility with all Pentax lenses and built-in image stabilisation.
