Nikon D90 Price Drops Below RM3,000

There is a huge drop in the price of Nikon D90 in Malaysia, with the price going down from RMRM3,185 to RM2,585 (body only). That’s a whopping RM600 drop, which is not a small amount, making it an appealing DSLR to upgrade to, don’t you think so? At that price point, the D90 is knocking lesser-spec entry level-cameras off the shelf.

There’s even a huge drop for Nikon D90 DSLR with kit set with Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens and a free 4GB SD plus Nikon DSLR bag. The price is RM3,495, a huge drop from RM4,688. [RM1 is equal to US$0.31]

All prices are for purchase made online. I’m not sure how long the prices will stay that way though.

the lowest price i’ve seen for D90 (body only) is RM1999.00, from a local forum site.

after 3 long years, D90 is still the king in its class in terms of image quality. (well, if u can forgive its slightly “old” video technology)

    Aiman,

I think other shops are also offering the D90 (body only) at less than RM3k because they can’t be selling the camera higher than Nikon’s own price.

    Hi Aiman,

I think by now the D90 body only can be bought for around RM2,600 or slightly more but still less than RM3k. If you are in KL go to the Nikon store at Suria KLCC.

    Happy Photographing!

i currently use nikon d300s, i also have tried d90,550d, d7000, d80, d3000 but d90 looks great and i’m interested in having d90 as my 2nd camera as im working on the photography. Many of my friends said that the d90′s price drops below 3K. Does this price only available online ? If at the stores, does the price of D90 drops too ? PM me if there’s any feedback. Thanks.

I think the Nikon D5100 is a good alternative. It has a newer sensor (same sensor with D7000), priced at RM2,698 with Nikkor 18-55mm, able to autofocus when shooting video (which the D90 couldn’t do). The downside of the D5100 is that it doesn’t have an in-body AF motor (it needs lens that has built-in AF); and it shoots at 4fps compared to the D90′s 4.5fps.

I don’t think the D90 plus the kit lens can be obtained below RM3k at the moment.

Please note, however, that this is not a recommendation; this is just my personal opinion. I haven’t tried either the D5100 or the D90. I’m a Pentax user :)

    Hi Nur Fatihah,

#If image quality is what you are looking for, the D5100 is the obvious choice. It is priced at less than RM3,000 (body plus lens). But it has no focusing motor in the body, meaning only lens with built-in focusing motor can be used but there are many Nikon lens with focusing motor.

#Right now if I want to buy a Canon, I might skip the 550D and go for the 600D. It’s RM3,000 (body with 18-55mm lens).

#D90 is still good but its technology is quite “old” already (it can’t auto focus when shooting video. The D5100 can). The image quality if the D5100, according to what I’ve read, is equal to the D7000, which is very good!

So, it’s a choice between D5100 and 600D :) Dua-dua pun ok, pilih salah satu

If not mistaken D90 and above has built-in motor on the body, so as long as the lens is F-mount and CPU lens, then shouldn’t be a problem. But it’s best you bring your older lens to the shop and test them one by one before you buy. So it’s either the aging D90 or the new D7000 and above for Lawrence.

By the way, I tested all the 50mm/35mm prime lens both D type and G type before settling for 35mm f/1.8G even though I could use the 50mm f/1.8d because of focal length on DX format. So like I said, you might wanna bring all your legacy lens to try it out.

    Hope this helps.

I heard that a replacement for Nikon D90 is on the line, maybe next year with better features. Can anyone confirm this? What happen to all our older manual focus lens like the infamous Nikkor 105 F2.5. Can we still use it on Nikon D3100 or D7000? Whats the drawbacks if it can be used? I am still looking for a nice digital camera like the above but I have an arsenal of older lenses. Should I sell them off cheaply? Can someone there give some feedbacks and advice?Thanz

RM 3000, u can get D90 body only or u can just add about 3 or 4 hundred to get D90 with Kit…

    New Price List

Hi, Do you mean RM3,000 or US$3,000? Just kidding :)

I assume it is in RM. The D90 (priced at RM2,988, body only at the moment) is a good camera and probably will last a couple of years more. However, the technology is quite “old” and a new “class” of Nikon cameras are coming into the market.

I think, for a budget of RM3,000 you can buy the D3100/D5000 body only, and invest in a good lens. Ideally AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED but this is mighty expensive; so you may want to consider a 3rd party lens like the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM Lens

All in all you still need a few hundred ringgit more to achieve this. Or you can save up and wait for the D7000 (am pretty sure u won’t regret spending a bit more for the D7000)

Hope this is helpful in some ways.

Thanks for the insight, I finally bought the D90 kit at RM3500. From what I gather, the VF 18-105mm is good lens to start off with. And I must say that it is much user friendly than most prosumer/ultrazoom models I’ve used. What a surprise!
I didn’t get the lowepro bag coz couldn’t find that model in Ipoh. So I took the Nikon bag, but I plan to get a holster type as an auxiliary carrier.

it depends what you want, really. the kit lense of the d90 (18-105 3.5-5.6) is about RM1K market and typically can get for RM850 if you look hard enough.

I agree that the body of both camera is about the same price, but if you are looking for lense to works with it, perhaps one good way is to compare both brand’s 18-200 “holiday lense”…and then, you will find that both prices are almost the same.

in short, D90′s price drop is a reaction of 550D price…it’s a marketing decision ;-)

I am using d90 for the past 1 year. No rregrets.

I halted my decision to buy EOS 500d/550d when I heard of the price drop.
    EOS 500d, 18-55mm = RM2700
    D90 + 18-105mm = RM3500 (not the best price)
    Assuming 18-55mm lens cost around RM250, then EOS500d body only = RM2450. But now, D90 body only = RM2500
How to decide? I know the 105mm is a more expensive lens… but it’s still a RM1000 price difference if want to buy the kit. Aiyo yo…..

Helping my friends out as they are carrying these too.

    http://opstupe.blogspot.com/2010/04/d90lowepro-promotion-see-to-believe.html

They offer upgrade to Lowepro Revo 180 by topping up RM180 on top of the RM3460 (kit set+4gb+normal bag) or RM2500(Body+4gb+normal bag).

Thanks to Canon for launching the 550D, which essentially made Nikon lower their price!
