Rare Winged Ant Species Captured on Video Using Pentax K-7 and Pentax 100mm f2.8 Macro WR

I was exploring the backyard recently when I came across this strange species of a winged ant.

I’m not sure whether this is really a rare species, scientifically speaking, but this is definitely the first time that I came across this strangely-formed ant species despite all the years of growing up among the jungle of Borneo. Shall I call this the Long Borneoan Winged Ant?

Video was taken with Pentax K-7 and the smc Pentax D FA f2.8 100mm Macro WR lens, with the camera set on tripod. There was a slight breeze at that time so the footage appears a bit shaky.

I’ve posted pictures of this ant at various insect forums. Let’s see what we can come up with.

  • Tadpole

It’s a Stephanid wasp, a parasitic insect. Its long tail is for laying its eggs into other living host.

Thank you for the info. So it’s a wasp species after all… :)
