Gimme five! Sony fans and executives must have been high-fiving themselves today the moment the announcement on Sony’s first mirrorless interchangeable lens camera (MiLC) cameras, the 14.2 megapixels NEX-3 and 14.2 megapixels NEX-5, went live on the world wide web.

And they have a good reason to celebrate: their little cameras are making heads turn because of several firsts:

  • Firstly, these are Sony’s first foray into the MiLC segment and what a foray it has been
  • The NEX-5 is also the smallest MiLC camera in the world
  • Both cameras are also the first non-compact Sony cameras to feature the Sweep Panorama technology, marrying super wide-angle pictures with DSLR-like image quality
  • The two cameras are also the first MiLC cameras to have the capability to shoot at ISO 12,800
  • The NEX-5 is also the first camera in recent memory to receive a full review within the hours of its release.

Of course, there are still many firsts waiting to be unveiled in the world of MiLC cameras, chief of which is a faster continuous shooting mode. So, who’s next? Will it be Pentax?
