Nokia N8: Large Sensor Camera Phone

As recent as a couple of years ago, the thought of buying a camera phone for one’s snap-shooting needs instead of a compact camera, would not have crossed the minds of many especially those who are used to taking pictures with good compact cameras and expecting a decent image quality from their gears.

This year however, a person on a tight budget — who might find the prospect of buying a smart phone and a compact camera a bit hard on the pocket — can consider investing in a good camera phone instead, something along the lines of the new Nokia N8, and still be right about his decision.

Nokia N8... 1/1.8-inch 12-megapixel sensor

At 1/1.83-inch in sensor size (that is might large for a camera phone), the N8 has the largest sensor in a mobile phone to date; and with a Carl Zeiss optics to boot, one can actually seriously consider making the phone a carry-everywhere snap-shooting tool.

I’ve been actually looking for a second camera which I can carry everywhere and have been looking at the new Samsung EX1, which has a 1/1.7-inch sensor, but alas it takes forever for the camera to reach my shores.

I also need a smart phone to get me substantially geared in this increasingly wireless world and since my budget is on the tight end, it makes sense to consider a good camera phone.

Speaking of Nokia 8, the official Nokia blog, “Nokia conversations”, has posted a thorough frequently-asked-question on the N8, covering specifically its capabilities as a photography tool.

The Nokia N8 sample images shown in the blog are indeed pleasing. Quite honestly, I’m bought. I think my Pentax K-7 will soon have a sophisticated and sleek companion in the form of the N8. The N8 ships from end of next month.
