One thing you can say about Panasonic Lumix DMC LX3 is it has a real wide angle lens. I mean, really, really wide for a point-and-shoot compact camera.
Take a look at these samples, here, here and here. At 24mm, it can really take panoramic pictures that make you go wow.
So, if panoramic pictures, close up photographs and general picture-taking, coupled with superb image quality, are the things that you need in a camera, then the LX3 will be the obvious choice.
Panasonic said the LX3 also features a film mode with six color types and three types of monochrome selections. “Much like selecting from different film types, this function gives the user the flexibility and creative freedom to take more expressive digital photos.”

Hastily barbecued prawns by yours truly. The recipe is simple — clean up the prawns, rub some salt on the prawns’ “injuries” and throw them into the fire.

Now, I’m in a dilemma about which category should I put this close-up photo. Should I put it under “still life macro” or “odds and ends macro”? Then it occurred to me that perhaps I should create another category — “food macro”.
Food are (is?) a great source for macro photography. Here are dozens of photos on Flickr with a “food macro” tag.

It’s good to know people are reading this blog and I sincerely thank you for the feedback either through the comment section or through emails.
This blog welcomes photo contributions, either close-up photos or any other photos you feel like contributing. The photo of ants below is contributed by Darryl Joseph, taken with a Canon PowerShot S5 IS.

Ants are a difficult subject to photograph, especially up close, because even a slight movement can throw the subject out of focus; and ants just won’t stop moving. Darryl managed to freeze one of stubborn ants in this photo.
Good job Darryl and thanks for the contribution.

There are photographers and there are photographers. And there are those who shoot thought-provoking photographs and won the Wildlife Photographer of the Year award.
If I had my way, I would put up a competition titled “Wildlife Macro Photography of the Year”.

This is an unoccupied traditional house of the Rungus people of Borneo, called the long house. The round, gray object on the right is a satellite TV disk from which the long house residents get their daily dose of Hollywood and world pop culture.

Boats and trawlers moor quietly near the Pasir Panjang ferry terminal, south of Singapore. Seen in the distance is an Apache combat helicopter, patrolling over the seas.
The helicopter had just flown pass when I switched on the camera. After the camera’s agonisingly slow start-up, I finally managed to frame this shot but the mean chopper had gotten away, leaving only a tiny spot on the frame, reducing the beast-machine into a mere dragonfly.

Would have been better if I had managed to capture the chopper as it was flying above the boats. It would have been dramatic… it would have been as though the Apache was preparing to rain fire on the boats and trawlers below.

But you can’t have the best of both shots, especially if all you’ve got is a point-and-click camera.
One day, I hope to shoot a picture of a Cougar helicopter — or any other combat-capable helicopter — patrolling over some boats over Malaysian waters…
