Dragon Fly Macro, My 100th Post

Date June 1, 2008

This is my 100th post since I started this blog on October 11, 2007. It has been a journey punctuated by rapid burst of entries and several long intervals in between.

This photo of a dragon fly was taken today at the Butterfly Park in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Heeding my own advice on taking photos, I’ve taken dozens of shots but alas, the weather was not helpful. The sky was overcast and the rain came soon enough.

To commemorate my 100th entry, I’m posting here all the usable shots out of several dozens I’ve taken at the park before the rain came.

Macro Photography Blog is number two on Google search for the keyword “macro photography blog”. It used to be in number one.

This blog is still number one on Yahoo! for the keyword. On MSN, however, this blog is nowhere in sight even after the third page.

Pixelated Grammar

Date March 7, 2008

This is a photoblog and while it’s the picture that matters most, no less important is the accompanying article — because if a picture paints a thousand words, a thousand words should be able to describe a picture.

To tell you the truth, I was quite careless with my write-ups in the past, resulting in many grammatical mistakes; some embarrassing, some downright elementary. But from now on, I shall endeavour to minimise them, if that is possible.

By the way, this is a species of fungus my tribe called the “purak mato” or “the white eyes”. Don’t ask me how my progenitors could come up with such a name as they have been describing species in their own less than scientific way.

You know, they even have names for the various phase of the moon!

Hmm… PR1 After Four Months

Date February 29, 2008

I finally got my first PageRank today after four months of blogging. Does that mean that this blog will be PR2 in four months’ time, i.e in June? Let’s see. I certainly want to work towards that though.

Macro On Flickr Pro, The Journey So Far

Date February 5, 2008

I’ve recently upgraded my Flickr basic account to Pro account for two years ending November 2009. I’ve also renewed this blog’s domain name for another two years, expiring January 2010.

Now, with that being taken care of, I can now perhaps set my sight on acquiring the new Canon 450D by middle of this year.

Macro Shots

Anyway, here’s a little secret. I also have several other blogs which I hope I can somehow turn into money making blog. So far, I have not been successful although a small amount of advertising revenue had begun to trickle in.

I’m hoping somehow that I can earn enough dollars to buy the 450D. What’s your money making secret? Care to share?

Macro Photography Blog Is One Month Old

Date November 11, 2007

Macro Photography Blog, which I started on October 11, is one month old today. During its formative days, I’ve filled it up with mainly close up pictures of living things. Some of the pictures are over a year old while some are quite new. I had in my safekeeping tons of macro pictures which I took over the years, but they are not always usable.

Over the past month, this blog has not seen a single day without a post, but the time has come perhaps to think about the direction of this blog.

Filling up this blog with close up pictures is not the most difficult thing to do. So long as there are pictures in my stockpile, I can go on posting more pictures day after day but that is not what I originally intended to do with this blog. Obviously there are more to macro photography than the picture — we can talk about the process of taking photos, the techniques and the technology behind it, the various camera brand and so on.

So perhaps after one month of doing just posting close up pictures, I should now take this blog to a new level, broaden its horizon a bit to not only to presenting macro photography as a results of using technology, but also to discuss about the technology itself.

It think it would be useful, to me at least because then I would have to learn more to be able to talk about the subject. But rest assured, I’d still be posting pictures although no longer on daily basis.

Back To (Photography) School

Date October 29, 2007

After going it alone for two weeks now, I decided today to see if I can hang out over at Digital Photography School, by signing up as a forum member. The process was easily done and in less than five minutes, I got myself registered.

“Back to school” was not really an appropriate title for this entry because I had no photography school to go back to — I’ve never been to photography school before. All I did was to learn through trial and error with whatever equipment I had.

Speaking of equipment, I got my first camera when I was 15 years old. That was decades ago, when computer was still rocket science to mankind. It’s a small camera that uses 110-type black and while film.

Wanna know I got it? I was in Secondary Three at a boarding school in Sabah when I saw an advertisement in the paper about cameras for sale by mail order.

I filled up the mail order form and had it sent to the retailer with a cover letter, saying “Please send me this camera by registered mail. I’ll pick it up at the post office. As for the payment, I’ll pay it at the post office once I receive the camera.”

A month later, I receive a notification slip saying my camera has arrived at the post office. When the time come for me to collect the parcel, I asked the man at the counter about the payment. He told me I needed not pay the post office anything.

Huh? I took the camera anyway and played with it until it broke down about two months later.
